KMRU presents WAI8

Joseph Kamaru, aka KMRU, is a sound artist whose practice is grounded in the discourse of field recording, noise and sound art. At Le Guess Who? 2026, he presents WAI8, an eight-hour durational performance that examines time and attention through the practice of waiting as an active form of engagement. Through noise, silence, drones, rhythm, voice, and waveform, WAI8 explores how sound can stretch, fracture, loop, or dissolve linear time, establishing a framework for sustained listening and temporal immersion. Since its inception in 2023, it has evolved into an open format for solo and collaborative contributions. Its iteration at Le Guess Who? features nine performers, positioning waiting as a space where sound is allowed to breathe, decay and resonate over time.

WAI8

long- durational

Ordering of time refutes spatial agency and temporal autonomy, thus reproducing uniformity and linearity to time, altering the understanding of reality and political engagement with it. WAI8, an 8 hour durational performance, configures spatial-temporal unmapping by negotiating movement, body, time, and space. Positions of liminality are brought to the surface rendered by enveloping and dissociative sounds, field recording, and noises as actual events experienced by (own) body. WAI8 is an invitation and extension to listening with a radical openness to the interstices and the in-between — a fracturing of timelines and spatial agency.

What lies within the interstices and teh inbetweens of movement and stillness? What  possibilities emerge from that liminal sace of what has been and what is to come ?

Positions of liminality are brought to the surface, rendered by enveloping dissociative sounds, field recordings, and noises as actual events experienced by the body through the sonic work by KMRU. In this exhibition, we are taken on monifold journeys as invitations to experience the artists inner and physical movements through deep listening.
The Sonic Pieces resounding from different spaces in the exhibition are excerpts from WAI8, an 8hour durational performance, in which KMRU configures spatial-temporal unmappings by negotiating movement, body, time and space. This fractured timeline offers listeners the ability to dwell in the liminalities of uncertain and the possible.
